Before Ukraine became the permanent breaking-news banner of Europe, it was already a fault line, a pressure point, and a place where history had inconveniently refused to stay in the past.

Frontline Ukraine: Crisis in the Borderlands by Richard Sakwa examines the roots of the Ukraine crisis after 2014, looking at revolution, Russian power, NATO, Europe, nationalism, geopolitics, and the grim habit of great powers treating borderlands as chessboards with real people living on the squares.

This is not a cheerful book. It is, however, the sort of book that reminds you how rarely international crises arrive out of nowhere. Sakwa digs into the competing stories, fears, ambitions, and historical grievances behind the conflict, offering a serious political analysis of a region where every map seems to come with an argument attached.

There is a bleak irony in reading a 2016 book on Ukraine now. What was already alarming then looks, with hindsight, less like a crisis and more like a warning flare. The book belongs to that uncomfortable category of modern history: the “this was all visibly going wrong” shelf.

As sold by Crappy Old Books in good condition, this is a strong choice for readers of geopolitics, modern European history, Russian affairs, and anyone who likes their international relations with fewer slogans and more uncomfortable complexity. Not light reading, perhaps, but then neither are borderlands.
